Dear Melanie,
You were too young to die in the car accident—so much ahead of you. Your wedding day was approaching quickly, along with my grandchild growing strong inside you. I’m so sorry that I cried when you told me you were pregnant. I’m so sorry I said, “You ruined your wedding!” I regret many of my “parenting” moments but this one is my biggest. If only I would have been as happy as you were. If only I would have celebrated with you. If only you wouldn’t have died. I’m so sorry. I love you and your unborn child who was never to see the world or be held by a judgmental grandmother. Please forgive me. I can’t forgive myself.
Love you,
Mom, age 50
